Bali is known for its amazing scenery and the Tengenungan Waterfall and Village is one of the best places to see, But is it worth seeing? This might seem like I answered this question within the 1st sentence of this article, but there is more to know about the Tegenungan Village other than its waterfall… Things you should know before heading down there.
But In short is the Tegenungan worth seeing?
Yes of course!

Let’s Talk about the downsides of this beautiful place then I’ll sell going to visit it for yourself!
The downsides of visiting the Tegenungan Waterfall
I write these downsides to make you aware of the problems you face rather than discourage you from visiting. It just seems everyone is too interested in bragging about its beauty rather than giving a real review!
The Stairs of the Tegenungan Waterfall
If you are unfit, then walking anywhere in Bali can be a mission, 30 plus (86 plus for you Americans) in the most humid weather that I have ever imagined. Add 100’s of steps if not thousands. It feels like an impossible task. going down will have you sweating and going up will have you crying!
I have taken more pictures of the steps than the waterfall itself, due to the fact It was an achievement for my fat arse to make it back up alive.
I saw tour guides taking tourists up and down these steps and I really felt sorry for them. Once in my life was enough!
We nearly decided not to visit the bottom because of the steps.
Other tourists ruin the experience of the Tegenungan Waterfall
I have read a couple of posts about the Tegenungan Waterfall, everyone always seems to moan about how busy it is and how you should leave early so you can get it on your own. I not sure this is a valid moan. It’s a tourist hotspot what do you expect? But because everyone else likes to rant about this I might as well add my two cents.
If you want to get that #balilife photo then head down at 6:30 am when it opens or just head down there at a normal time (LIKE A NORMAL PERSON) and watch everyone struggle with the steps too. If you want to get that #balilife photo then head down at 6:30 am when it opens or just head down there at a normal time (LIKE A NORMAL PERSON) and watch everyone struggle with the steps too.
Tegenungan Waterfall is a sellout spot
Market stalls and over places to sell your clothes and other touristy bits and pieces.” come buy, cheap”. There are a lot of stalls sell the same stuff. They might try and get in there shops, but its actually quite friendly and no different from the guy in the English markets shouting about “oranges, 3 for a fiver”
Side note– Go to one of the shops and get some water! You will need it! (and a wee? It’s a good idea, as its free with a purchase)
But the one sell-out Instagram famous thing, that I’m not on board with is the swing! Many are dotted all around Bali but people queue up to have their photos taken one. The prices of the vary from swing can range from a 30,000 IDR (around 3 AUD ) to 350,000 IDR (around 35 AUD).
The Price to see the Tegenungan Waterfall
Yes it’s a Negative about the whole experience due to the fact your paying to see nature, But I paid nearly the same price for bottled water so who am I kidding?
The of the Tegenungan Waterfall Prices
- Visiting the bottom of the waterfall – 15,000 IDR (1.50 AUD)
- Car Parking (Included in my taxi fare) – 5000 IDR (0.50 AUD) (Free for Motorbikes)
- Top on the Waterfall -10,000IDR (1 AUD)
Rules and Swimming in the Tegenungan Waterfall
A lot of people don’t care about the dangers of the waterfall or the signs. The signs are there protect because, yes you are allowed to swim in there under certain conditions but I’m not shocked that people have died in there!
It would be nice to have a dip in the water as its so hot but, walking up the stairs wet… no thanks
Let’s move on the positives now!
The upsides of visiting the Tegenungan Waterfall
When I say upsides of the Tegenungan Waterfall, I’m not talking about the stairs.
There are only two upsides to the Tegenungan Waterfall, The view and how you can see the view!
The beautiful Scenery
It’s the reason 99.99% people visit the other 0.01% go down just to write blogs about it!
It’s not a letdown either, yes its super touristy but they don’t have too many shops deturbing the view, which is nice. Of course, I can spend all day posting amazing photos of the place but its something you have to see for yourself, here are a Couple!
Side Note- There is a second small waterfall at the same site two, but I could be bothered to walk any further as I was super tired and sweaty already
How to view the views
The Balinese people (not sure if that’s Grammarly correct) have really thought out this spot to make it a wonderful experience. They have gone out their way to make you take the best photo’s possible. They do this by lookouts and bird cages and other little arty spots. The only problem is everyone now takes and posts the same generic photos.
(I am one of them)
The last thing, I noticed and wanted to talk about, is this poster on the stairs.
Is this positive or negative, I’ll let you decide in the comments!
Very strange, Not sure who its really for? My guess is to show the fact they have women’s rights in Bali for tourist benefit. Felt a little fake. Let me know in the comments.
Thanks for reading
